      <image:title>Welcome - Feel Recordings Volume 1 (World Galaxy)</image:title>
<image:caption>The title Feel Recordings is a homophonic spin on the quintessential field recording moniker, a name given to those sonic investigations and musics documented out in the world somewhere. In this case, however, the ethnographic recordings are rendered and experienced in here meta-locally, or, rather, inside us where things are felt, hence, the referenced “feel.” The solos and duets that are the basis for Feel Recordings Volume 1 were also recorded in a single room home studio, with two microphones that primarily stayed in place, occasionally being moved closer to the specific Instruments that were connected with, in the moment. The whole process was physically close, and intimate, of conversations, sharing, improvising … These 12 musical installations involve long-time West Coast colleagues Carlos Niño and Dexter Story whom some know as the early 2000s group The Life Force Trio (Plug Research, Ninja Tune) and who both belong to a robust community of musicians, vocalists, DJs, creatives, programmers, organizers and the like based in greater Los Angeles. Feel Recordings Volume 1 is an ode to the affinity and respect that Niño and Story have for their people, city, each other and this new collection is their first excursion into a more natural and pure expression together. Note the spacial and deliberate "room present" recording quality throughout, augmented with splashes of overdubbed magic. Featuring guest appearances by LA-based tenor saxophonist rising star Randal Fisher and transcendent contributions by multi-instrumentalists Maia, Laraaji, and Sibusile Xaba, Feel Recordings Volume 1 sets out to give you, the listener, “something you can feel” and something to explore, for and within yourself.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Welcome - Bahir (Soundway)</image:title>
<image:caption>Dexter Story is an artistic spirit in the truest sense of the phrase. From his work as a multi-instrumentalist for acts like the Sa-Ra Creative Partners, to his management role with Snoop Dogg and his turn producing Daymé Arocena’s 2017 album Cubafonia, Story understands the business from every conceivable angle. Initially inspired by the music and cultures pervasive throughout the Horn of Africa, Story translated his experiences there into his previous album Wondem, followed closely by the single Wejene Aola featuring jazz luminary Kamasi Washington, both on Soundway Records. If Wondem was a brief glance into Story’s new creative vision, Bahir is a pinpoint refinement of that purpose, the fine-tuning and expanding of the world he created on his Soundway debut. On Bahir, Story steps in front of those influences and melds his world into the one he fell in love with so strongly while in Africa. One way in which he’s done so is by incorporating musicians from both sides of this coin. LA luminaries are featured throughout, as are African contemporaries he encountered throughout his travels. Sudan Archives gives a show-stealing vocal performance on “Gold”, while the Ethiopian producer Endeguena Mulu adds impenetrable and psychedelic texture to the album’s title track. So Bahir finds the polymath musician not stuck between two worlds, but as a member of both. We get Ethiopian tonalities, Ethio-groove, eskista, gurage and North Sudanese shaygiya dance rhythms, Afro-funk, Somali soul and forays into more contemporary global rhythms, too. Angelenos like Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Josef Leimberg give the record its backbone, while tributes to Ethiopian devotional music such as "Desta's Groove Pt.II" give Bahir its glimmer and shine.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Welcome - Wondem (Soundway)</image:title>
<image:caption>On his debut Soundway Records release, Story distils his diverse background in soul, funk, jazz and folk idioms into his own unique and worldly voice. Borrowing from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya, this collection of East African-influenced music is a testament to Story’s decades of dedication to artistic excellence. “Wondem is a unique collection of songs inspired by my passion for and immersion into African music and culture over my career” says Story. “This body of work came about as I began to compose and arrange for Todd Simon's Ethio Cali, an emerging ethio-jazz ensemble in Los Angeles. Wondem means brother in Amharic and I felt a strong brotherly connection to Ethiopia during the process.” ‘Wondem’ was written and recorded in Story’s personal studio in downtown Los Angeles and one of his closest associates, producer, composer and musician, Carlos Niño co-produced the record. It was mixed at Niño’s home studio. In addition Story worked with an array of collaborators on the record. Renowned multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson featured on the percussive track ‘Mowa’ and international producer and artist Mark de Clive-Lowe plays piano and synthesizer on a number of songs, in particular on ‘Yene Konjo’, where his acoustic piano playing there was originally inside of the main section of the song but Story felt it was so beautiful that he moved it to its own highlighted place. Story also worked with Alsarah Elgadi and Yared Teshale on ‘Wondem’: “I felt that the record needed indigenous language on it and Yared delivered the beautiful ‘Sidet Eskemeche’, which means “we will remember” or “it will never be forgotten”. Alsarah sung in beautiful Arabic for ‘Without An Address’, which addresses the refugee concerns in her native Sudan.” Outside of ‘Wondem’ Story has used his many talents in a supportive role serving a who’s who of iconic artists throughout his career. From tenures as Snoop Dogg’s product manager and Meshell Ndegeocello’s day-to-day representative to performing with post-millennial luminaries like Dwight Trible, Quadron, Sa-Ra Creative Partners and Gaslamp Killer, Los Angeles-based Story has a proven track record of lending the assist to established and emerging artistry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Welcome - Seasons (Soundway)</image:title>
<image:caption>*Remixed and remastered* in 2020 by renowned engineer Andy Kravitz, Soundway presents Dexter Story's debut solo album Seasons, co-produced by Carlos Niño. L.A. mainstay Dexter Story first released Seasons in 2013 - featuring guests from Los Angeles’ close-knit jazz and soul community, including Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Dwight Trible, and a then relatively-unknown Kamasi Washington. For his debut album, Dexter Story looked to artists such as Bill Withers, Steely Dan, Donovan, and Earth Wind and Fire, for inspiration in creating a record that’s cosmically-minded, but wrapped in the folky, blue-eyed soul that Carlos Niño is known to regularly play. The message that Dexter had in mind when writing these songs was one of optimism and empowerment, to create a classic record that would reward repeat listens, and grow with the listener, that could be enjoyed through several decades. Carlos made it his mission to ensure all the musical parts facilitated that message, and the result is an album steeped in powerful melodies and chord changes, stacked harmonies and deep feeling. Album opener ‘Underway (Love Is)’ has echoes of Bobby Caldwell and ‘Sun Goddess’-era Ramsey Lewis, as steel pan and kalimbas combine with soaring strings and synths over a shuffling wood block groove to set the tone for the positive vibes to come. The album is also interspersed with plenty of instrumentals. On ‘Blood Drip’, Dexter nods to his love of hip hop, and even the influence of The Cavern’s favourite sons get a nod on the penultimate track ‘Spring’, with its alternate rising and falling progressions. That’s at the heart of ‘Seasons’, the rise and fall of the annual journey, the themes of death, rebirth and renewal. Some songs recall the warming, fiery crescendo to summer, while others hint at the cooling down to winter. ‘Seasons’ is about life and the planetary cycle, and in that sense it’s an album everyone can relate to. In Dexter's own words: "Seasons express the ever-changing aspect of the universe, the omnipresent ebb and flow of all life, the divine duality of our existence. They embody the beginning and end, destruction and renewal, birth and death, the folding inward and unfolding outward. Fire, water, matter, space. Cycles, continuum, infinity, eternal love... Our ancestors lived by the seasons. We live by the seasons. Our children will live by the seasons." - Dexter Story</image:caption>

      <image:title>Welcome - Living Room (Plug Research)</image:title>
<image:caption>The Life Force Trio was conceived and founded by Carlos Nino, it also includes Dexter Story. In the album there are unlisted contributions from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Fabian Ammon, Derf Reklaw, Dwight Trible and Jesse Sharp. Pitchfork wrote: In his review of Hu Vibrational's Beautiful: Boonghee Music 2, Dom Leone called eclecticism a luxury, the kind of thing that's "more attainable when you don't have to sweat the basic shit." That record featured Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake applying their percussive talent to everything within reach in service of a neo-exotic vision where esoteric instruments were squeezed into every form imaginable; it was produced by the Los Angeles-based Carlos Niño, also of Ammoncontact, whose latest project is the Lifeforce Trio. Mr. Niño must not have to worry about the basic shit, because on the evidence here, eclecticism appears to be his middle name. Niño's partner in the Lifeforce Trio is multi-instrumentalist Dexter Story, and the third member of the trio is filled out by whomever else they happen to be working with at the moment (eight people fit that description on Living Room). There's no overarching style at work, so they go where the music takes them. And here that means *TNT-*style post-rock ("Tone Poem"), neo-shoegaze indie pop ("Space Flowers", which leads to the carnival-of-sorts melody "Carousel"), and lyrical after-the-rain jazz fusion ("Luminous"). What binds it together is a sense of restraint and economy. You expect an album like this to drag on too long, but at 37 minutes, Living Room feels thoughtful and precise. It's as if they had 20 ideas fleshed out and chose their nine best ones for the record.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Welcome - Love is the Answer (Ninjatune)</image:title>
<image:caption>Exclaim wrote: “"Be careful what you ask for and you might get it,” is a phrase that avant-garde jazz vocalist Dwight Trible is only all too aware of. One day he wondered aloud to LA groove renaissance figure Carlos Niño what an album of his vocals over progressive hip-hop soundscapes would sound like. Before he knew it, Niño had recruited multi-instrumentalist Dexter Story to form the Life Force Trio along with Trible and had assembled hip-hop beats from the likes of Madlib, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Jay Dee among many others for Trible to caress with his spiritually rich tenor. The result is a balanced yet leftfield affair, continuing the progressive vibe of love and community values so strongly vaunted on Build An Ark’s excellent Peace With Every Step, which Trible and Nino participated in last year; yet this time Trible’s voice is hinged to gritty boom-bap and organic soul. Sa-Ra inevitably rework "Equipoise” from that Build An Ark album into a synth-laden funk stomp and also hold down "The 10th Jewel, which features Brother J of X-Clan fame who thematically complements Trible’s approach. And after hearing the trance-inducing meditation of the sublime title track, it becomes evident that this vocalist, known over the years for his work with jazz musicians such as the late Horace Tapscott and the legendary Pharoah Sanders, comfortably connects with a new generation despite his somewhat unwitting involvement.</image:caption>
